Sierra Nevada Alliance 2016 Conference: “One Sierra, One Voice”
When: August 25-27, 2016
Where: Miners Foundry Cultural Center – 325 Spring Street, Nevada City, CA 95959
The Sierra Nevada Alliance would like to thank all the attendees, speakers, sponsors and volunteers who made the 2016 Annual Conference a huge success. This year’s conference, held August 25-27th in historic Nevada City, CA, was themed around unifying one voice for the Sierra, and included over 125 representatives from conservation-minded individuals, organizations and agencies.
The goal of this annual event is to bring together the conservation community working throughout the Sierra to highlight the latest research, projects, and provide for a unique networking opportunity.
The event began with specialized workshops provided from the Center for Nonprofit Leadership where attendees learned how to enhance the nonprofit mission through visual storytelling and how the Five Life Stages nonprofit model provides a basis for building organizational capacity. The following days were filled with exciting developments from the Alliance’s new Executive Director, Jenny Hatch, as well as inspirational and technical presentations from panels and keynote speakers on topics ranging from forest and wildlife management to some of the most recent strategic accomplishments for the Sierra.
Featured keynote speakers included Tim Palmer, the award-winning author of 25 books about rivers, conservation, and adventure travel; and John Amodio, who has worked on environmental protection for over 40 years.
The Conference also included a “graduation,” ceremony, for our 28 Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership (SNAP) members, who recently concluded their 11-month terms of service. Collectively over the last year, SNAP members monitored and restored hundreds of acres of impaired Sierra watersheds, educated tens of thousands of individuals, recruited thousands of volunteers and contributed hundreds of thousands of hours of service.
Overall, this year’s Conference was a huge success and the Alliance owes that to the dedication and commitment of the Sierra community. This year’s conference truly set the stage for how the Alliance will begin to more actively engage with our partners and community, focusing on advocacy and policy, and brainstorming goals and strategies for Sierra protection and restoration. The Alliance is incredibly grateful for our Sierra-wide partners, members, and supporters and we look forward to collectively bringing ideas from the Conference into fruition.
